Switching transformers are the heart of high-frequency power converters. They provide the output voltage and current levels required by the application, galvanically isolating the load from the grid, in compliance with safety standards.
The grid voltage, rectified and stabilized, powers the transformer through electronic switches that switch at frequencies of tens or hundreds of kHz. Depending on the application, the system power, and voltage & current requirements, different converter circuit configurations can be chosen. The most commonly used topologies are flyback, forward, and push-pull for power ratings up to a few hundred watts; half-bridge and full-bridge are particularly suitable solutions for higher power ranges.
In industrial applications, it is rarely possible to use standard power supplies, and consequently transformers, as each application has specific requirements in terms of efficiency, safety, robustness, and compactness.
